The port was built in early 14th Century, during the Kotte Kingdom. It was upgraded and converted to a sheltered harbour during the latter part of the British Rule. The port was modernized in the 1980s and ranks among the top 35 ports in the world. They are working on another expansion project which will tripple their annual container handling capacity.
